Alumna, Heidi, recently went on a visit down memory lane- otherwise known as Manchester Museum. While she was visiting, we took the opportunity to have a chat about the gift Heidi has generously chosen to leave in her will in support of research at Manchester.
She spoke to us about her memories of Manchester, the inspiration behind her gift and her hopes for the future. Now, Heidi has generously chosen to share her thoughts with you too!
When I was a child, about 7 years old, my mother used to bring me to the University campus, to visit Manchester Museum on Oxford Road. I’ll always remember how the students smiled at me and seemed so happy.
I felt so welcomed and knew that, when I was older, I wanted to come to The University of Manchester too. It was a dream for me.
I am pleased to say that I applied to Manchester as my first choice and I was accepted to study modern languages- Spanish, French and German in 1975. While attending the University, I was able to make the most of my experience.

I performed in plays at the University theatre, I also got the chance to study and work in Spain – an experience that shaped who I am today. My experiences at University also helped me to develop my communication skills and enabled me to have an open mind.
When I was making my will, I thought about those experiences that made me who I am and decided that, because of how big a role Manchester has played in my life, I wanted to include the University in my plans.

When thinking about how I wanted to support the University, I considered the kind of future I want to make possible for the next generation. I personally understand the importance of medical research at the University. Especially as research done at Manchester supported my mum through a hip operation which improved her quality of life. That is why I have chosen to leave a gift in my will to support medical research at the University.
Ultimately, I want to create a future where intelligent minds are supported and encouraged. Where people are empowered through experiences similar to those I had, and given the space to come up with the life-changing research that will support other people like my mum in the future.
If you are thinking about remembering the University in your will, I would say speak to your solicitor and reach out to Amy, the Legacy Officer at the University. Amy can help share details of how you can write your will for free and suggest wording which will help to futureproof your gift. She’ll also make sure your wishes are understood so that your gift can have the impact you dream of.
