Sue, who works in the University’s Professional Services team, has generously chosen to support the next generation of students with a gift in her will. Now, Sue wants to share the inspiration behind her gift with others.

“My Manchester journey began in 1994 as a full-time postgraduate, studying for an MA in 17th Century English Literature. I went on to complete my MA and a part-time PhD in Shakespeare Performance. As well as a PGCE in Post-16 education. All while working a number of jobs to fund my studies.
Then, after working for 12 years at a local Sixth Form College, I decided to return to my alma mater. I loved my time as a Manchester student and felt that I wanted to ‘come home’ to the institution that had supported me – and helped me to achieve my academic goals.
After my experience of working with sixth form students in Manchester, I had first-hand knowledge of the impact the University’s access programmes had on young students’ confidence – raising their aspirations and informing their future career choices. To be honest, I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else.
The University has been such an important part of my life from such an early age, that I even married my partner on campus at the beautiful Christie Bistro.
Since returning to the University to work in 2015, I have learnt so much. I’ve worked with some fantastic colleagues, completed a PGCert in Higher Education, and trained as a Coach.

Most importantly, I’ve been able to see first-hand the impact that a legacy gift can make to the next generation.
That is why I have chosen to leave a legacy gift to support Manchester students – so that young people from low-income backgrounds have the opportunity to fulfil their ambition to study at Manchester. And so they’re able to shape their future careers at one of the leading universities in the world.
